Who are we hiring?ย 
The KC Current is seeking an experienced attorney that will add a diverse legal skill set to a face-paced legal department with constantly shifting demands and priorities. The Assistant General Counsel will have a strong background in transactional work and be able to own the contract review process with little assistance, from drafting and review through negotiation and execution. The Assistant General Counsel will have previous experience in litigation, employment law, data/privacy, finance or any combination of the foregoing. The Assistant General Counsel will play a key role in developing company policy and procedure, owning compliance, reporting and filing obligations and managing outside counsel.ย

What will you do?ย 
As a critical member of the KC Current legal team, the Assistant General Counsel is a critical thinker that likes to work in a face-paced environment, has a proven track record of being able to multi-task and meet critical deadlines with shifting priorities and is eager to apply his/her strong legal background to the sports industry. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Partner with business units and Ownership to provide practical, strategic and expert legal advice on issues related to complex business and legal matters related to the club, club facilities and the NWSL.ย 
  • Identify, minimize, direct and help solve litigation and compliance matters both individually and, when appropriate, with the assistance of outside legal counsel.
  • Establish club policies, procedures, and standard operating practices to ensure operational efficiencies, compliance with league rules and exceed industry standards.ย 
  • Work closely with individual business departments to anticipate, identify and manage legal exposure with respect to operations, communication strategies, marketing campaigns and development projects.ย 
  • Draft and review a multitude of commercial and vendor contracts, including specifically vendor agreement, independent contractor agreements, technology and software-based contracts with an emphasis on privacy and data, and construction, engineering and other service-provider agreements.ย 
  • Support the human resources team by providing guidance from an employment law perspective, draft and implement company policies, lead employee trainings, direct personnel investigations, draft employment agreements and advise company on updates on changing legislation.ย 
  • Implement risk management strategies across companyโ€™s multiple properties and serve as lead on insurance-related matters.ย 
  • Manage clubโ€™s robust trademark portfolio and brand protection efforts.ย 
  • Keep current on industry-wide legal trends and developments.ย 
  • Perform projects/duties as identified, defined and assigned by the General Counsel and/or Ownership.

What do you need to succeed? ย 
  • ย Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and a member of the bar in at least one state.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of business and/or litigation experience. Experience working at a law firm and in-house preferred.
  • Experience thriving in cross-functional environments.
  • Ability to work on several different projects and meet critical deadlines.
  • Eye for detail, a creative mind and excellent communication, writing and analytic skills.
  • Able to work non-traditional hours as needed.
  • Quick and self-motivated learner.
  • Able to effectively manage time and priorities.ย 
  • Civil litigation experience.ย 
  • Experience with employment law and/or data privacy law experience a plus.ย 
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating a diverse range of commercial agreements and corporate documents.ย 
  • Strong academic and professional background.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including 365, Word, Adobe and Excel.ย 
  • Experience in construction, real estate, finance and/or intellectual property a plus.

Special requirements of the Job:
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, inclusive of weekends, nights (event evenings & overnight operation shifts) and holidays.
  • ย Ability to monitor company communications and respond to time sensitive matters with senior executives.ย
