Excellent communication skills with students, staff, faculty and counseling peers are essential. We are looking for counseling faculty who are flexible in their work and adaptable to change. Position Description

Under the general supervision of the Administrator, in collaboration with the Dean of Counseling and Special Programs, the Counselor’s responsibilities include individual and group counseling; instruction of personal development courses; plan educational activities designed to enhance personal/social/emotional well-being of students; evaluation of assessments; orientation of new students; assignment to support a student population, including, but not limited to AANHPI, Puente, UMOJA, Veterans, Career Technical Education, and formerly incarcerated; collaboration and liaison to Department of Rehabilitation counselors; recruitment and liaison to local high schools and resource teachers; collaboration with various units on campus such as general counseling, Student Health Center, and Tutoring Center to ensure efficiency of services provided to students and implementation of innovative approaches to better serve students. This position may require assignments in the evenings and/or weekends and/or at off campus locations including online counseling.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for guidance and counseling functions of the assigned program.  
  2. Assist with students’ career exploration and program selection, adjustments to college and personal development.
  3. Provide students with information regarding resources, opportunities and assistance available to them at the college and in the community including procedures for enrollment, assessment, financial aid and academic progress.
  4. Ensure student populations are engaged in a guided pathways framework, including completion of comprehensive educational plans.
  5. Advocate for equitable opportunities for the college's diverse student population.
  6. Actively engage in technological tools designed to assist the students and institution in moving students toward goal completion.
  7. Teach Personal Development courses, as assigned, in accordance with post-secondary level established course outlines.  
  8. Develop curriculum and contribute to the Program Review process.
  9. Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
  10. Develop and implement a variety of effective counseling and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles. 
  11. Serve as a resource for faculty in dealing with individual student problems; refer students to appropriate campus and community resources as needed.
  12. Engage in activities that enhance rapport with local high school, Department of Rehabilitation, industry partners, and/or four-year institutions.
  13. Organize new student orientation, time management, organizational skills, and stress management workshops.
  14. Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports), including mandated reports focusing on Title 5 regulations.
  15. Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of curriculum as well as assess student learning outcomes at the course and program levels.
  16. Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means.
  17. Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and participation in shared governance and campus life activities.
  18. Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
  19. Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the United Faculty of Ohlone (faculty bargaining unit) contract, and as assigned at the Fremont and Newark campuses, and/or other designated locations.
  20. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 
Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling;
OR
the equivalent;
AND
Commitment to community college goals/objectives of being an equity-based and anti-racist institution, and providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests;
AND
Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.

(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Experience counseling students about community college options, including certificates, associates degrees and/or transferring to four-year institutions.
  2. Experience developing/coordinating workshops and events.
  3. Experience in developing and coordinating culturally responsive learning communities.
  4. Experience in working with culturally diverse student populations (teaching or other situations in a leadership role).
  5. Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity; recent experience working with Asian American, African American, Latinx, Native American, and other minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes; willingness to examine and remediate one’s relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students and others.
  6. A commitment to participatory governance, consensus building, and team approach to management.
  7. Experience in the use of computer technology as a teaching tool, including experience with course management systems (i.e. Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).
  8. Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  9. Ability to work successfully in a team environment.

Contract Period
This is a regular probationary, tenure track, faculty position commencing Fall Semester 2025. The contract period is 185 days. More information is available in the United Faculty of Ohlone (UFO) contract.

Continuance in this position is dependent on satisfactory performance and evaluations.

Salary Placement
The current salary schedule range for an entering tenure-track counseling faculty member is $83,527.00 - $127,858.00. Initial salary placement is determined per Article 16.3 of the faculty contract. Faculty members advance one step each year and have the potential to reach the current maximum step of $171,015.00, depending on the educational level attained.

Offers of employment are contingent upon Governing Board approval. Employment with Ohlone Community College is not complete or official until applicants meet all pre-employment requirements.
